Bike Bike 2010

A date has been selected for Bike Bike 2010, Toronto.

August 12th to the 15th 2010.

Bike! Bike! is an international annual conference organized by and for Not-For-Profit bike projects. It takes place in a different city each year. This year it will be hosted by Bike Pirates in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

If you have services, housing, or supplies you would like to contribute, or would like to help out in any other way, please fill out our volunteer form and/or send us an e-mail at: bikebike2010 -at- gmail.com

There will be an assortment of different workshops at Bike! Bike! geared towards helping bike projects better serve their intended communities. There will also be social events to help/encourage projects to netowork. Some things which may (or may not) take place include (but are not by any means limited to): Anti-oppression, Consensus Decision Making, and Working with Kids workshops as well as Spandex Dance Parties, Movies, and Bike Rides.

We're working hard on getting everything organized. Soon we'll have much more info available online as well as the ability to pre-register. For now, Canadians should sit tight, and Americans should make sure they'll hold valid passports for next summer.

Cleaning Up

For housekeeping reasons we have moved our content to a new blog which will be feeding directly onto the front page of our website bikepirates.com. We wanted a page that all Pirates could access and update easily, so a new blog was created.

Please head to bikepiratestoronto if you wish to keep following our adventures. Also check out the website for a new layout and tonnes of new content.

love,
B.P.

How to Bike Pirate...YAR!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Help keep our doors open to the public. If you are interested in bicycle mechanics or are akin to a D.I.Y. mentality, please volunteer your time.

Bike Pirates has two days put aside for new volunteers able and willing to learn how to interact with bicycles and cyclists.

Also please do not be shy for our Monday and Tuesday volunteer only hours. Come by Monday or Tuesday between 12-5pm and help us continually overhaul the Bike Pirates shop and bikes.

Spring Events!

Pirates is alive and kicking this spring! Our winter hours have continued, as have our monthly events. Heck, sometimes we have 2, or 3 (or 4) in a month! check out the Events page to keep up with what we are hosting or attending around town.

This Saturday June 13 we will be hosting one of our THREE Bike Month events - the Bike Pirates' Bike Wash! Join us in the back alley for a high-school-movie style Car wash...for bikes! We will scrub your bike, clean it off, lube it, pump the tires and let you know about any mechanical problems that might need attention.
June 13, 2-6pm.
$5-$10 PWYC

This is a fundraiser for the Bike Pirates kitchen mission. Help us finish building our counters so we can restart our Saturday Lunch Program!

Ride of Silence May 20th

I ask all to come out to the corner of Bloor and Spidina at 6:30-7pm on May 20th to honor the fallen cyclist, to raise awareness that cyclist are traffic and everyone needs to share the road.

WHY DOES THIS ORGANIZATION EXIST?

* To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
* To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
* To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET

On May 20, 2009, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North
America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in
a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured
while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right
to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't
aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists
themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas
after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a
passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here...)

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no
faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no
brochure, no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is
held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of
motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right
to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for
those who have been killed or injured.
